Mentoring is an individualized process that involves an experienced teacher guiding, coaching, and supporting a new teacher’s progression into greater levels of competence and confidence as a teacher and as a new teacher in Sulphur Springs ISD. A mentor is a friend to the mentee when emotional support is needed, a coach when individual assistance is needed, and a teacher when the mentee lacks information or skills. A mentor is an assistant helping the mentee to become more proficient through modeling planned and structured experiences, thoughtful informal conversations, and reflections. A mentor is entrusted with the care and education of other teachers and has a strong desire to share personal knowledge and experiences in order to nurture and challenge a new teacher.
All new to district teachers will be assigned a mentor. This assignment will be made by the campus principal. Beginning teachers with 0-2 years of experience will be assigned a mentor for their first two years with the district. Veteran teachers who are new to the district may receive a mentor during their second year with the district based on need or by request.
