New Teacher Academy
Sulphur Springs ISD provides a team approach in working with the new teacher, campus mentor, campus leadership, and curriculum department to provide support as teachers transition into their role in the district. The New Teacher Academy includes three components:
- New Teacher Jumpstart & Orientation
- Mentoring
- New Teacher Professional Development
New Teacher Jumpstart & Orientation
The new teacher jumpstart provides our new hires with access to the information they need in a self-paced online course. When hired, you will receive information on what times/dates are available to sign up to join a course. Additionally, the orientation program provides teachers with an introduction to district philosophies, practices, and important information to help transition smoothly into the district. New Teacher Orientation also includes ample time on campus in which teachers will meet their mentors and become oriented with their campus. New Teacher Jumpstart is provided at any time through the school year while Orientation only happens at the start of each school year.
Mentoring
All new to district teachers will be assigned a mentor. This assignment will be made by the campus principal. Beginning teachers with 0-2 years of experience will be assigned a mentor for their first two years with the district. Veteran teachers who are new to the district will receive a mentor for their first year with the district.
New Teacher Professional Development Opportunities
Throughout the year, new teachers will participate in training opportunities that are targeted to their teaching assignment. Kindergarten-5th grade new teachers will attend New Teacher-Elementary trainings while Grades 6-12 New Teachers will attend Secondary New Teacher trainings. Each PD session opportunity and activity will target direct information to what is imperative for new teachers as they progress through their learning.
