Exploring the Past, Understanding the Present, Shaping the Future

Social Studies helps students understand the world around them and their role in it—as citizens, learners, and problem-solvers. Our curriculum builds knowledge of history, geography, economics, government, and cultures across the globe.

What Curriculum Sources our District Utilizes:

What Your Child Will Learn:

Grades K–2: Myself, My Community, My World

  • Learn about self, family, and community
  • Explore rules, responsibilities, and why they matter
  • Identify national symbols, holidays, and historical figures
  • Use basic maps, globes, and timelines
  • Begin understanding how people live differently around the world
     

Grade 3: Communities in the Past and Present

  • Study how communities change over time
  • Learn about local history, economics, and different types of jobs
  • Understand how government and laws help communities function
  • Practice reading maps, charts, and simple historical documents
     

Grade 4: Texas History

  • Explore the geography, cultures, and history of Texas
  • Learn about Native peoples, explorers, the Republic of Texas, and statehood
  • Understand civic responsibilities at the state level
  • Study how natural resources and industries shape Texas
     

Grade 5: U.S. History (Beginnings to Reconstruction)

  • Dive into the founding of the United States: colonization, revolution, and Constitution
  • Learn about major events like Westward Expansion and the Civil War
  • Understand the foundations of democracy, freedom, and justice
  • Practice analyzing primary sources and historical perspectives
     

Grade 6: World Cultures and Geography

  • Explore regions of the world, their cultures, governments, and economies
  • Learn about landforms, climates, and population patterns
  • Understand how geography shapes history, trade, and daily life
     

Grade 7: Texas History (Deeper Exploration)

  • Revisit Texas history with more depth: independence, annexation, civil rights
  • Study civic engagement and how Texas fits into the larger U.S. story
  • Analyze maps, artifacts, and legislation
     

Grade 8: U.S. History (Revolution to Reconstruction)

  • Focus on the development of American democracy and major historical shifts
  • Study key documents like the Declaration of Independence and U.S. Constitution
  • Understand causes and effects of the Civil War and Reconstruction
  • Build skills in historical argument and source evaluation

High School Courses May Include:

  • World Geography: Explore how geography affects people, places, and environments; analyze regions, cultures, migration, conflict, and globalization.
  • World History: Study ancient civilizations, world religions, revolutions, global conflict, and the rise of modern nations.
  • U.S. History: From post-Reconstruction to the present day—exploring wars, civil rights, economic shifts, and global leadership.
  • U.S. Government: Learn how local, state, and federal governments work, including the Constitution, branches of government, and current issues.
  • Economics: Understand personal finance, supply and demand, entrepreneurship, and the global economy.

How You Can Support at Home:

  • Discuss local and national news together (in an age-appropriate way)
  • Visit local museums, landmarks, or historic sites
  • Encourage curiosity by asking, “What do you think life was like back then?” or “How would you solve that problem?”
