📚 Welcome to Our Reading Curriculum Page!

At Sulphur Springs ISD, we believe that strong readers become lifelong learners. Our reading program is designed to help every student grow as a fluent, confident reader and writer. Grounded in the science of reading, our curriculum focuses on building skills in comprehension, vocabulary, and written expression—while nurturing a true love of reading.

  • Grades 6-12: TEKS Resource and SAVVAS

📖 What Your Child Will Learn:

Grades K–2: Building the Foundation

  • Phonemic awareness, phonics, and decoding strategies
     
  • Listening comprehension and story elements
     
  • Early writing: letter formation, complete sentences, punctuation, and expressing ideas
     
  • Introduction to spelling, grammar, and vocabulary

Grades 3–5: Reading to Learn

  • Transition from learning to read → reading to understand
     
  • Comprehension strategies: summarizing, identifying main ideas, analyzing genre
     
  • Writing narrative, informational, and opinion texts through the writing process
     
  • Strengthening grammar, spelling, and sentence structure

Grades 6–12: Deep Thinking Through Reading and Writing

  • Analyzing complex texts with critical thinking
     
  • Writing argumentative, narrative, and explanatory essays and research papers
     
  • Organizing ideas clearly, refining tone, and writing for various audiences
     
  • Strengthening vocabulary and literary analysis skills

To ensure every student is supported at the right level, we regularly assess growth using tools like:

  • NWEA MAP assessments
     
  • mClass progress monitoring (K–2)
     
  • End-of-Unit Common Assessments
     
  • STAAR Benchmarks

These assessments help teachers tailor instruction to meet individual student needs.

🏠 How You Can Support at Home:

  • Read with your child daily—no matter their age!
     
  • Ask questions like “What happened first?” or “Why do you think the character did that?”
     
  • Explore books from the library or free apps like Epic! and Storyline Online
     
  • Talk about what you're reading, too—modeling matters!
     
  • Encourage writing at home—spelling words, creative stories, or letters to family and friends
