BCIS
Course Description

Business Computer Information Systems is designed to develop technological skills with applications to personal and business situations focusing on word processing, spreadsheets, databases, telecommunications, desktop publishing, presentation management, and emerging technologies by using a project-based, hands-on approach. This course will develop intermediate level skills in Microsoft Office 2003 applications. BCIS will count for one credit of the graduation requirement in Technology Applications and is approved for Tech Prep college credit.

During this year, students in my BCIS class will be participating in what I call "on-the-job training". I will cover the same material as all other BCIS courses on this campus, but I am managing the classroom as if the students are employees at a make-believe company, A-1 Service. I will lead training sessions, which will include three phases: Phase 1 - skills will be introduced, demonstrated, and taught using various approaches; Phase 2 - students will be assigned practice exercises to determine if they understand the concepts taught during Phase 1; and Phase 3 - skills will be reviewed and students will take an objective test to assess their knowledge of the skills taught in Phase 1 and reinforced in Phase 2. After the training sessions, they will be assigned a specific number of jobs to be completed by a certain deadline. The students will earn imaginary money for their work performed on the job and will earn a real grade and credit for the class.

I want the students to not only learn computer skills this year in my class, but to also learn the soft skills that employers desire for prospective employees--such as interpersonal skills, knowledge and ability to use good work ethics, communication skills, time management, and leadership skills to name just a few. I want the students to not only be computer literate after completing the class, but to also be employable and successful in their future careers.
